Commercial and branded production in New Jersey
Spots, campaigns and brand films, shot in New Jersey with a local crew — whether you need the whole production or just the part that happens on the ground here.
New Jersey sits between two production markets and inside the New York metro. That is useful: crew and equipment are close, and locations that would be expensive or over-shot in the city are often straightforward here.
What it also means is that the rules change town by town. A spot that shoots on private property in one borough and on a sidewalk in the next is dealing with two different permit regimes on the same day.

New Jersey logistics that affect a commercial
The things that most often surprise a team shooting here for the first time:
- There is no single statewide permit. New Jersey municipalities that require a film permit set their own process, fees and lead times. Two locations can mean two separate applications.
- Insurance certificates take real time. Many towns require a certificate naming the municipality as additional insured, at a specified limit, before issuing.
- Parking is often the actual constraint. Reserving metered spaces for a van and a truck is frequently what turns a no-permit shoot into a permit shoot.
- Police coverage may be mandatory, not optional. Where a road is affected, several towns require off-duty officers at production cost.
- County and state roads have separate authorities. A municipal permit does not cover a county road, and neither covers a state highway or a park.
- The tax credit usually does not apply. See the tax credit guide before assuming it does.
Discuss your commercial or branded shoot
Send the concept or the boards, your dates and the kind of location you are after. If you only need crew and equipment around your own director, say that and we will price it that way.
Tell us about your New Jersey production
This is a paid production inquiry to BLL Films, the production company that created and runs this site. It is not a request to a New Jersey agency, and it is separate from the free research questions we answer about filming in the state.
Common questions
Can you crew a commercial in New Jersey if we already have a director?
Yes. That is a common shape for this work. You bring the director, the boards and the client relationship; BLL supplies the crew, equipment and local production management and runs the logistics. It is a smaller engagement than a full production and is scoped that way.
What size crew does a New Jersey commercial usually need?
It depends far more on the setup than the budget. A tabletop product shoot on a stage can run with four or five people. A location spot with talent, a client village and a street presence needs departments: camera, grip and electric, sound, art, wardrobe, production. Tell us the boards and the locations and the crew list follows from them.
Do we need a permit to shoot a commercial on a New Jersey street?
Often—especially when the production uses sidewalks, reserves parking, places equipment in public space or affects traffic. The rules are set by the town rather than the state. Several municipalities also require police coverage at your cost when a road is involved. Check the permit finder for the specific town.
Can you deliver social cuts as well as the main spot?
Yes. Vertical and square versions, cutdowns and platform-specific edits are normal deliverables and are best planned before the shoot rather than after, because framing for a 16:9 spot and a 9:16 cut are different decisions on the day.
How far in advance should we book?
For a straightforward location or studio day, two to three weeks is comfortable. If you need street closures, police, a hard-to-clear location or specific talent, start earlier. The municipal lead times on this site are minimums for a complete application, not estimates of how long the whole approval takes.
