Do I need a permit to film on private property in New Jersey?

Possibly. You need permission from the property owner, and municipal requirements may still apply depending on the town and the production’s impact. Contact the municipality with the actual scope of your shoot before assuming you’re exempt.

Is there one statewide New Jersey film permit?

No. New Jersey has no single statewide filming permit. Local filming requirements are generally handled by the municipality or agency that controls the location, and each town’s process, fees and lead time can differ.

What does a “Film Ready” town designation actually mean?

Film Ready is a certification from the NJ Motion Picture & Television Commission showing a municipality has adopted a formal filming ordinance, named a film liaison, and completed a short training program. What is the New Jersey film tax credit rate?

The credit is 35% of qualified wages and salaries statewide, and 35% on goods and services used outside a 30-mile radius of Columbus Circle in Manhattan (30% within it). Studio Partners and Film-Lease productions can reach 40%, plus a diversity-plan bonus of up to 4%. Is the Netflix Fort Monmouth studio open for filming?

Not yet. Netflix Studios Fort Monmouth is under construction. The first four soundstages are targeted to open in 2027, with the remaining eight following in 2028. No stage on that campus is currently available for production bookings. See the Fort Monmouth & Monmouth County guide.

Are there working soundstages in New Jersey today?

Can New Jersey double for New York City on camera?

Often, yes. Jersey City locations like Exchange Place and Paulus Hook have doubled for Manhattan in productions including Joker, A Beautiful Mind and Men in Black. Whether a specific location works depends on the frame, architecture, signage and logistics of your shoot.

How early should I contact a New Jersey town before filming?

As early as practical, and specific minimums vary by town. Jersey City requires 15 days’ notice for major permits needing street closures; East Brunswick requires at least five business days. Larger crews, traffic control and specialized activity generally need more lead time than a small interior shoot.

Can you find a location that is not listed on this site?
