Four different things people mean by “I need a crew”
Choosing the wrong one is the most common way a production budget goes sideways. The difference is worth two minutes.
A single owner-operator
What you get. One professional plus the kit they own and maintain, quoted together.
Suits. Interviews, small documentary and corporate days, second units, b-roll.
A complete department
What you get. A department head plus their team and package, coordinated as one unit.
Suits. Commercials and branded work where camera, or grip and electric, has to scale.
A full local production crew
What you get. Multiple departments, production management and logistics coordinated together.
Suits. Multi-day or multi-location New Jersey productions.
A conventional rental house
What you get. Equipment only. You supply the operator, insurance, transport and prep time.
Suits. Productions with their own crew, or large and specialised orders.
An owner-operator arrives with kit they know, maintain and have insured, and their prep, transport and troubleshooting come with them. A rental house gives you the equipment and nothing else.
For large orders, specialty cameras, extensive lighting or grip trucks, a rental house is often the right answer, and BLL Films will say so. See the New Jersey rental-house directory if that is what you need.
How a request is handled

Dates, locations, scope and technical needs.
2. We review requirements
Scale, schedule, deliverables and any client, union or insurance conditions.
3. We identify options
Potentially appropriate crew and equipment options are shortlisted from the private network.
4. We confirm reality
Current availability, rates and engagement requirements are confirmed with the individuals themselves.
5. You get a proposal
A proposal or a recommended production structure, with the trade-offs stated.
6. Everything is documented
Crew, equipment, payroll, insurance and production responsibilities are documented before booking.
Nothing is presented as booked until step 6. Availability quoted early in a conversation is an indication, not a hold.
