The Whisper Man filmed across New Jersey. Here is what is confirmed before its Netflix premiere.
Netflix releases the film on August 28, 2026. It shot across several New Jersey municipalities in spring 2025, and the towns are not equally well documented. Here is what holds up, sorted by how good the evidence actually is.
Only one municipality is confirmed by an official municipal source: Plainfield, whose own Office of Film & TV names the production. Westfield and Scotch Plains are reported by two named outlets. North Plainfield and Montclair rest on weaker evidence and are labelled as such below.
The film
The Whisper Man adapts Alex North’s novel: when his eight-year-old son is abducted, a widowed crime writer turns to his estranged father, a retired detective, and finds a link to a decades-old case. James Ashcroft directs, from a script by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer. It is Netflix’s sixth film with the Russo brothers’ company AGBO. Netflix lists a 1 hour 54 minute runtime, rated R.

A conflict worth flagging. Local coverage from April 2025, in both Patch and New Jersey 101.5, named Michael Keaton as a co-star. Netflix’s own cast listing, published July 9, 2026, does not include him. Casts change between production and release and we cannot resolve which is right, so we publish Netflix’s list as authoritative for its own film and flag the discrepancy rather than quietly picking one.
Municipalities, sorted by evidence
Every roundup of this production lists the same handful of towns as though they were equally established. They are not. The distinction matters if you are using this as research rather than trivia.
Confirmed by an official municipal source
Plainfield
The City of Plainfield’s Office of Film, Television and Digital Media names The Whisper Man on its own municipal page, in a list of productions that have used the city alongside The Night Agent, American Horror Stories and A Complete Unknown. That is a municipality confirming its own filming history, which is the strongest evidence available short of a studio statement.
Plainfield also published its filming dates publicly at the time: April 4, April 29, May 9 and May 12–16, 2025, in the Downtown Entertainment District and the Van Wyck Brooks Historic District. Both New Jersey 101.5 and Patch reported those dates independently. They are historical, more than a year past, and are published here as a record of what happened.
Reported by two named outlets
Westfield and Scotch Plains
Patch and New Jersey 101.5 each reported filming in both Union County municipalities in April 2025, both attributing the sightings to NJ.com. Two independent outlets citing a third is reasonable evidence that filming occurred. It is not a municipal confirmation.
That coverage named a specific residential street, a private home and a public school. We do not publish any of it. Municipality is the finest granularity this site uses for residential filming locations, and a shoot that wrapped in 2025 does not make someone’s house a landmark.
Reported, but on weaker evidence
North Plainfield
New Jersey 101.5 reported crews setting up on April 11 and 12, 2025, but attributed the sighting to a TikTok post, which is user-generated rather than reported. A TAPinto headline separately stated filming was to begin April 7. We could not load that article’s body to check what it actually established. Plausible, not confirmed.
Montclair
Montclair Local published a headline stating that a Netflix thriller with Robert De Niro would film at a historic Montclair building. We could not open the article body, so the reported dates and the specific building are unverified here and are not repeated.
Worth separating clearly, because the two get confused: Montclair is independently confirmed as a filming location for a different production, Trust the Man, by New Jersey Monthly. See that note. A Montclair confirmation for one film is not a confirmation for the other.
What a multi-town feature actually demonstrates
Set the tiers aside for a second. Even counting only the municipalities that hold up, this was a feature that moved repeatedly between separate municipal jurisdictions in Union, Somerset and Essex counties over a shoot measured in weeks, not days.
That is the practical argument for New Jersey that no incentive brochure makes as well. The towns sit close enough together that a company move is a short drive rather than a lost half-day, while the architecture changes enough between them to read as different places on camera. Plainfield alone publishes ten historic districts.
It is also the part productions underestimate. Each municipality is a separate application, a separate contact, a separate fee schedule and a separate approval timeline. Plainfield asks for at least two weeks’ notice, a certificate of liability insurance naming the city as an additional insured, and a signed hold-harmless agreement, and it sets its permit fee against the production’s budget. The next town over will differ.
Build the permit calendar backwards from the tightest municipal lead time, not the loosest, and open every town’s file at once rather than sequentially. A five-town schedule is five parallel approval tracks, and the one you start last is the one that moves your date. Before anyone goes looking
Filming finished in 2025. Streets have been restored, dressing has been struck and storefronts have changed hands. Nothing described here is a set, none of it is open to visitors, and none of these municipalities is offering access because a film shot there. Nothing on this page suggests any location is currently available to a production.
