Why this guide is provisional

We have seen the documents currently in circulation and are deliberately not linking them, because two errors in them would cost a production real money or real leverage:
- The application states a $150 application fee. The adopted ordinance sets $100. It also leaves the major-motion-picture fee blank.
- The draft location agreement selects California law and Los Angeles County courts for a New Jersey municipal agreement. Whatever the intent, do not sign that without counsel.
Until the revised packet is issued, treat the ordinance as the source of truth and get anything the form says that contradicts it confirmed in writing.
What the ordinance establishes
Apply at least four business days ahead. The application fee is $100, or $25 for nonprofit and educational projects, which carry no daily rate.
Daily fees for filming on public land are $150, rising to $500 for a major motion picture. Filming that stays entirely on private property, using no public property, carries no daily municipal fee — though that is a limit on the fee, not a blanket exemption from municipal review.
Notice to affected parties is three days and is conditional: it applies where filming actually affects businesses, merchants or residents, rather than to every shoot.
The ordinance also sets insurance requirements. We are not restating limits here, because the figures should come from the current packet rather than from a third-party summary. Ask the Clerk for them alongside the application.
Costs beyond the municipal fee
Public-safety staffing and municipal support costs are additional. The Township provides an estimate and may require an escrow deposit against it, so the number you are quoted at application is not necessarily the number you pay.
Confirm before filming. The municipal permit fee is only one line of the cost. Police, fire, traffic control, parking, cleanup, escrow and property-owner charges are project-specific and set departmentally. Ask for a written estimate for your actual footprint before you budget.
